Rectory School Chapel Program

A long-standing tradition of Christ Church is offering a monthly chapel service to the students attending the Rectory School across the street from the church. The chapel service is offered to the entire school community—day and boarding students—as well as their instructors. Currently these services are led by Vestry member Donna Bessette, who is also Director of Spiritual Life at Rectory, with input from Mother Cosman.

Rectory students also attend Sunday worship services when it works with their school schedule. Some Sundays as many as ten students are able to join the congregation at the 10:00 service, and they are welcomed by parishioners both in the sanctuary and at coffee hour. The Blessing of the Animals was a particularly popular Sunday for students to attend.

Mother Cosman also conducted a brief service and the imposition of ashes for Rectory students and faculty on Ash Wednesday; and art students learned the history of our stained-glass windows from parishioner Linda Goodwin.

The spirit of cooperation between the church and the school sounded a new note when the Rectory School music department stored equipment and conducted weekly drum lessons at the church while its facilities were under construction and renovations. Similarly, the congregation appreciates the opportunity to comfortably accommodate an enlarged audience for its annual Christmas pageant at the Rectory School’s Tang Center.

Mother Cosman and Mrs. Bessette are in conversation to expand the relationship as opportunities present themselves.
