Welcome to our church web site. Pomfret is located in the northeast corner of Connecticut, just west of Putnam. We are a rural community of 3500 with a well-thought-of community school (K-8) and a very good local regional High School, Woodstock Academy. At the same time we are not far from Worcester, Providence, Hartford and Boston. We are east of Storrs, the main campus of the University of Connecticut and an hour away from Mystic and Newport. Known as the “quiet corner” we can be fairly busy!
Christ Church was founded in 1828, 175 years ago, although the church and the rectory are relatively new…since 1882. We have benefited a great deal from a growth in population attracted to the low housing costs. Approximately 50-60% our membership has joined us in the last 8 years.
Our mission as an Episcopal parish is to equip the “ministers” of Christ for service at home, at school and in the workplace. Generally, during the academic year we have three services on Sunday morning, 8 a.m., Rite I, 9:15 Rectory School Chapel and 10:15, Rite II, with Choir and Youth programs. The Choir rehearses at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning and supports our worship at 10:15. We also have a contemporary music band called ninesixteen that leads that service musically on various Sundays through the year. ninesixteen has also performed at various venues locally and in the state. (They can be contacted through the main email address). A further note on our schedule…. the Rectory Chapel at 9:15 runs according the Rectory School academic year which starts the second weekend in September and ends with the last weekend in May with 3 week breaks in December and March as well as scattered weekends. Sometimes it`s best to check with us to be sure the service is scheduled when close to Columbus Day weekend or one of the above mentioned months. The single Christ Church summer service is also at 9:15 and starts the first Sunday in July and ends with Labor Day weekend (we combine the 8 and 10:15 together in the summer).
Other programs include healing services, adult study programs and Women`s retreats, a Men`s Group and a Community Kitchen program that brings a meal to another site nearby. Our Church School (Nursery- 5th or 6th grade depending on the year) and Teen Program (Rite-13, Journey to Adulthood (J2A) and Young Adults in Church (YAC) ) are a primary focus of our activity here. I mentioned the Rectory School. Located across the street, it was founded by a former Rector in the 1920s. There are many close ties between the church and this private middle school ( www.rectoryschool.org ).
I have been the Rector here for over 15 years following a long and successful pastorate that set the stage for welcoming many young families. Often more than half our congregation of 125- 160 at the 10:15 service is under the age of 18 making for a lively but exciting communion time. I have found this a joyful congregation and while we hold diverse opinions about politics and the church we gather around a single focus…. striving to be helpful in the Lord`s service knowing the wonderful gifts God has bestowed upon each.
Yours -in- Christ,
Fr. Dave Carter
